This work is a commemoration of the loss at sea of Brian and Martin Winsor of Wesleyville, Newfoundland. The two men, friends and relatives of David Blackwood, were lost on a seabird hunt at the end of March 1978. As shown in the image, the ice floes on the Labrador Sea are densely packed and especially dangerous at this time of season. Blackwood continued this tragic story in a second major etching, The Great Peace of Brian and Martin Winsor, showing the two men and their rifles at the tail of a great bowhead whale.

The original owners of this work were introduced to David Blackwood by Woodrow “Woody” Roberts, also a native of Wesleyville, Newfoundland. Roberts, by all accounts, was a living embodiment of the long and rich tradition of storytelling from that region. This work comes from an impressive private collection of Blackwood’s work that includes the iconic Fire Down on the Labrador, lot 28 in Heffel’s Spring 2024 live auction.

“H/C” or “hors commerce” designates this impression as outside the standard numbered edition and "not for sale." These impressions are typically reserved for studio use or as gifts.
