PROVENANCE
Acquired directly from the Artist by the present Private Collection, Toronto

This brisk, expressive, Group of Seven period oil sketch by A.Y. Jackson is an early example of the artist’s depictions of Georgian Bay. Before Algoma, Lake Superior and the Rocky Mountains were sources of inspiration for the artists who formed the Group of Seven, Georgian Bay was their principal landscape muse. Their home base in this area was often the cottage of ophthalmologist Dr. James MacCallum on Go Home Bay. MacCallum’s patronage allowed Tom Thomson to become a full-time artist, and his co-financing with Lawren Harris of the Studio Building in Toronto provided many in the Group with a space to work and even to live. As well as opening his cottage to these artists, MacCallum also commissioned Jackson, Thomson, J.E.H. MacDonald and Arthur Lismer to produce murals for its interior in 1915 to 1916, which are now housed in the National Gallery of Canada. The striking geography and dramatic weather of this beloved region sparked masterworks large and small from each of these important chroniclers of the Canadian identity.
