PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Montreal

A signatory of Borduas' cultural manifesto Refus Global in 1948, and a member of the abstract painting group Les Automatistes, Rita Letendre’s long career began within the emergence of abstraction in Canada. Often most celebrated for her early Montreal-period abstractions such as Reflet d’avril, 1960, sold by Heffel in November 2023, her style would undertake many major and fundamental transformations. Over time, both her forms and textures would flatten, elongating into her structural, hard-edge paintings such as Otilapa, 1972, sold by Heffel in July 2023. The vibrating, emanating light in works such as this one from 1986, however, show her return to an intense, gestural style. Reaching from edge to edge on the canvas, they combine the expansiveness of her hard-edge works with the powerful, almost drastic expressions of her earliest painterly breakthroughs, pointing to the unity that exists within Letendre’s expansive and multifaceted body of work.
