PROVENANCE
Private Collection

At verso of this work is a sketch of a figure in a landscape.

Frère Jérôme was an influential painter and teacher involved in avant-garde aesthetics along with his spiritual journey. He was a close friend of Paul-Émile Borduas and in the 1960s built up a body of work parallel to the expression of automatism. Otage de la Vêprée and Matin nouveau, both from 1966, belong to that highly intuitive period, with its thick pictorial medium applied with a spatula.

We thank Patricia Aubé, curator and educator at the MACBSP, for contributing the original French essay.

Consignor proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Musée d’art Contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul.
