EXHIBITED
Musée Marc-Aurèle Fortin, May 24 - August 28, 1994

Marc-Aurèle Fortin is a pivotal figure in Quebecois art with his great leafy elms, Montreal port scenes, and paintings of rustic houses. His bold manipulation of form combines with an openness to experiment with technique. Vieilles maisons québécoises (c. 1939) comes from a period in which Fortin brought something new to his watercolours—using charcoal to create masses of black that lend power and expression to his works.

We thank Patricia Aubé, curator and educator at the MACBSP, for contributing the original French essay.

Consignor proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Musée d’art Contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul.
