PROVENANCE
Private Collection

Jean Paul Lemieux was a painter of vast spaces who captured the Canadian winter like no one else. This untitled 1983 work scrapes away all extraneous elements to get down to the stark contrast of black and white. The extreme simplicity of the composition creates a feeling of intimacy, set off by the striking solitude of the figure in the foreground.

We thank Patricia Aubé, curator and educator at the MACBSP, for contributing the original French essay.
