PROVENANCE
Private Collection

René Derouin is a multidisciplinary artist interested in migratory phenomena as well as notions of territory and identity. In 1994 he dumped 19,000 ceramic statuettes offshore from Isle-aux-Coudres as part of a project called Migrations. Derouin grew up near the St. Lawrence River, which holds particular importance in his work.

Derouin’s 1998 work Ressac IV is a wood polychrome finely worked by the artist to evoke the stirrings of a body of water. Ceramic bas-reliefs are also incorporated below the surface level of the piece.

We thank Patricia Aubé, curator and educator at the MACBSP, for contributing the original French essay.
