LITERATURE
Jack Shadbolt, In Search of Form, 1968, page 198, reproduced page 198

Jack Shadbolt discussed Night Beach, Collioure 1 in the publication In Search of Form. He noted, “what is important, I learned, is that the design elements should not be injected gratuitously for mere decorative effects but organically evolved for subtle increases for expressiveness. In this way they are absorbed. Whether in formal or informal composing their deployment is one of the great tools for the building of the pictorial drama.”

Shadbolt also related that this image was derived directly from his experience of “the shining flotilla of fishing boats on the water at night in the village of Collioure…the left drawing suggests the dramatic excitement of the beach under the night lamps when the boats were being loaded. It is flashing, agitated and vividly graphic even though the treatment is highly summarized. All is activated movement.”

It is interesting to note that, as was common to Shadbolt’s practice, he reworked this piece following the publication of In Search of Form. Most obvious is the added layer of black ink to cover the ribbon-like forms in the bottom quadrant of the work.
