Sorel Etrog’s Homage to Nijinsky stands as a powerful example of the artist’s lifelong exploration of the human condition through abstract form. The bronze sculpture rises in a series of interlocking curves and angular protrusions, creating a dynamic tension between fluidity and rigidity. The title likely refers to Vaslav Nijinsky, a groundbreaking dancer of the early twentieth century known for his extraordinary jumps, expressive power and innovative choreography. His performances in works like Petrushka made him legendary, and his modernist ballets had significant influence on the future of dance.

The sculpture’s vertical thrust suggests aspiration and growth, yet its segmented surfaces imply fragmentation. Etrog often drew on the language of hinges and joints, and here those motifs evoke the ways people assemble and reassemble themselves in response to experience. This work is impressive in scale but also retains a delicate sensibility.

Please note the plinth shown in the images is included in the sale of this lot and measures 20 x 20 x 3 inches.
