Marcel Barbeau’s Abstract exemplifies the artist’s enduring commitment to non-figurative expression and all-over composition. This 1976 oil on canvas is animated by a dense field of energetic marks, where colour and gesture extend across the entire surface without a central focal point. The composition reflects Barbeau’s early engagement with Automatist principles, in which spontaneous, intuitive action guided the creative process.
As one of the younger members of the Automatistes, Barbeau played a key role in dissolving traditional figure-ground relationships, instead “knitting together” his marks into a unified pictorial field. This approach is evident here, as layered splashes, drips, and rhythmic applications of paint generate a sense of movement and immediacy. The surface appears at once chaotic and controlled, suggesting a balance between impulsive execution and an underlying structural awareness.
Barbeau’s experimentation with materials and techniques, ranging from industrial paints to unconventional tools, finds resonance in the work’s varied textures and dynamic interplay of forms. Although rooted in the radical innovations of the 1940s, Abstract demonstrates the artist’s continued exploration of abstraction decades later. It stands as a testament to his role as an innovator in Canadian art, consistently pushing the limits of painterly expression.
