Victoria Baker notes in her catalogue: “On 21 October Paul painted portraits of his sister Claire and her young daughter, also called Claire. The latter is especially fresh, rich in colouring and direct in its sketchy brushwork. On Monday 3 November he left for Paris, accompanied by his father and sister, apparently with the intent of travelling to Rome and Madrid.”

This collection of works by Paul Peel is a rare offering to the Canadian market, as the works have been held in the family of the artist for over a century. They provide an intimate look into the artist’s production in the last years of his life, when he had returned to Canada after his personal triumph of winning a bronze medal at the Paris Salon of 1890.

In the accompanying photos, we see an image of Claire Belden as a baby, along with an image of her as a baby with her mother Clara, Paul Peel's sister.
