Lemoine Fitzgerald was a respected figure in his artistic community, a brief member of the Group of Seven, and importantly, a founding member of the Group’s successor, the Canadian Group of Painters. This painting was originally owned by fellow CGP artist Bertram Brooker, who expressed deep admiration for it in his letters to Fitzgerald. Shortly after acquiring the work in 1931, Brooker wrote, “since it has now so firmly established itself on our walls, we would have great difficulty in parting with it,” and elsewhere called it “a very beautiful thing… I am [to] no end proud to have it for a while.”

Other artists shared Brooker’s enthusiasm. Brooker noted that artist Charles Comfort, on seeing this work, “just jumped … he agrees with me that it is one of your very topnotch things”. In another letter, Brooker relayed that “Lismer … saw it on a wall just across from a Cezanne reproduction,” and “felt that it stood up extremely well beside it”, and that “Lawren admires it, too.” These contemporary reactions speak to the high regard Fitzgerald’s peers held for his work, as well as the captivating quality which this painting possesses.
