Although a subject most synonymous with his fellow Group of Seven members Lawren Harris and J.E.H. MacDonald, Arthur Lismer also produced beautiful depictions of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. A small number of his on-site oil sketches appear throughout the auction record, with Lismer known to have produced as few as four canvases of this subject, including Mountain and Lake (sold by Heffel in December 2021). Harris returned to the Rocky Mountains multiple times, and MacDonald journeyed there nearly every summer throughout the entirety of the 1920s, but the supposed reason that Lismer’s visits to the area were so few was his beloved wife Esther. She was said to have preferred the open, expansive vistas of the Atlantic Ocean or Georgian Bay to the imposing and immediate grandeur of the Rockies, and Lismer lovingly obliged. Nonetheless, Lismer captures the immense majesty of this famous region with a character that is both solidly rugged and buoyantly fresh. This compelling and rare work comprises a brief and under-celebrated element of Lismer’s important explorations of the Canadian landscape.
