Phillips began producing watercolours regularly after returning to Canada in 1925. He eventually completed illustrations for Frederick Niven’s well-known book Colour in the Canadian Rockies and for Dreams of Fort Garry, which was co-produced by Robert Watson, editor of the Canadian history magazine The Beaver, published by the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC). This connection led to Phillips’s involvement with HBC, resulting in three of his watercolours being featured in their company calendars over the years. The other two watercolours that were included are Parting of the Brigades, 1826 (Yellowhead Pass) and H.B.C. York Boat at Norway House.
