"I've very seldom been asked to do portraits, or paintings on commission, but in some ways I enjoy doing them… In England I had a couple of clients, collectors, who bought some of my work, and they wanted me to paint their portraits. And that was all right, because they weren't bothering about likenesses… and I didn't want to make a pretty thing of a portrait… I did one later of Mrs. H.B. Hill. She's a poet. She sat for it. It looks very much like her. She didn't like it, she thought it made her look too old… The human face has always intrigued me…"
