E.J. Hughes was born in North Vancouver in 1913, and had a remarkable career in the arts spanning 70 years. Following his graduation from the Vancouver School of Applied Art in 1933, Hughes joined the army and developed his skills as a war artist. Upon returning home, Hughes was awarded the inaugural Emily Carr Scholarship at the recommendation of Lawren Harris which helped launch his career with the fabled Dominion Gallery in Montreal. In 2001 he received the Order of Canada.

The Seashore at Crofton was the first original print created by E.J. Hughes since the early 1930s. It was developed by the artist in partnership with Masato Arikushi to benefit the Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation Artists for Kids Trust. The image was hand-crafted with 26 blocks to create the final work, which is in an edition of 100 plus 10 artist’s proofs. The accompanying pictures show Hughes with Masato Arikushi, Gordon Smith and Patricia Salmon assessing trial proofs.

Please note: the full sheet size is 22 x 28 inches.
