David Milne Jr. and David P. Silcox, David B. Milne: Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings Volume 2: 1929 - 1953, 1998, reproduced page 940, catalogue #502.1
EXHIBITED
Western Canada Art Circuit, Paintings by David Milne, 1953 - 1954, traveling exhibition, exhibited as Snowy Morning, dated March 1949 on the Duncan list, catalogue #22
The catalogue raisonné states: "This is the first recorded painting of Milne's 1949 winter trip to Baptiste Lake and his first painting after a long lay-off (about nine months). He had not painted since the early spring of 1948 when he was working mostly from autumn sketches of 1947. In the intervening months he had built a log cabin at Baptiste Lake, finally completing the roof just before freeze-up and his return to Uxbridge in mid-November. Milne came back to the still-unfinished cabin on February 3, 1949. He hired a farmer with a horse and sleigh to take his supplies, including a small Quebec heater, down the lake. One of his first jobs was to enclose a smaller and more easily heated space within the empty cabin and to install the double front windows looking out onto the lake. As he reported to Kathleen Milne on February 5, he thought the dim light had given him headaches, but that it was 'very nice now, particularly in the afternoons when the sun shines and warms the room.'"
