Abraham Etungat was a distinguished Inuit sculptor celebrated for his dynamic depictions of birds, particularly those with outstretched wings. Among his most renowned works is Bird of Spring, a masterpiece that captures the essence and movement of avian forms with exceptional grace. Originally carved as a 14 cm stone sculpture, the piece was later reproduced in a series of seven-foot bronze statues between 1980 and 1981. These monumental works are displayed in prominent public spaces across Canada, including Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Halifax, symbolizing the arrival of spring and the renewal it brings.Bird with Upswept Wings is a striking reinterpretation of the iconic sculpture, rendered here in a dramatically larger scale. At 41 cm high, it is one of the largest examples we have encountered. With wings extended well above the bird's head, this piece differs from the original carving but retains the same vitality and elegance, making it a cherished piece among collectors and art enthusiasts alike.
