The La Cloche mountains near Killarney, Ontario was the site where Franklin Carmichael executed many of his finest watercolour sketches. This location would be an enduring influence for two decades following his first visit in 1924. While he would expand many of the sketches made en plein air into large-scale oils in his Toronto studio, the particularities of the landscape - characterized by rolling hills of white quartzite, sapphire lakes and rangy Jack pines - was perfectly suited for watercolour, a medium in which Carmichael excelled.

This scene is an outstanding example of the artist’s work and skill as a watercolourist. The distant purple-blue hills are ridged with crowns of greenery, and veins of lighter pigment recall the mineral quartzite bands. The translucent, streaky clouds and deeply marbled colour of the lake seem to mirror and extend this lush landscape, fusing the solid ground with water and air. The overall effect is gemlike, the view coalescing together in a vivid panoroma anchored by the foreground trees, which give the vista a sweeping sense of scale.
