Heffel's 1840 Sherbrooke Street West gallery is a grand late 19th century stone building which has retained many of its original interior features including carved woodwork, stained glass windows and decorative plasterwork.
Originally a substantial family home it now offers ample exhibition and office space spread over 8000 square feet. The exhibition space for previews for the live and on-line auctions is on the ground floor. Spread throughout the rest of the building there are special rooms for appraisal, photography of works, storage and shipping.
One of our major priorities is the secure storage of valuable works of art. All artworks are stored in our large vault when not on exhibition. Moreover, the entire premises are protected by a state-of-the-art monitored alarm system.
Our experts are available for free and confidential assessments of works. Once accepted, all works are properly catalogued and prepared for exhibition. The works are professionally photographed with high quality equipment in our in-house digital photography lab.
Sherbrooke Street is often compared to New York City’s Fifth Avenue. It forms the south border of the area known as the Golden Square Mile, so called because at one time it housed an astonishing seventy percent of the country’s wealth. Just opposite the building is the Grand Seminary which was established in 1676.
Today this city’s prestigious stretch is home to a cluster of opulent and charming apartments, restaurants, designer boutiques, antique stores and art galleries. One can also find McGill University, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and a number of reputed hotels including the fabled Ritz-Carlton.
While this area has always offered art-lovers a venue for buying artworks the addition of Galerie Heffel in Montreal is expected to add a convenient new facility for consignors and buyers alike and will undoubtedly help the promotion of historical and modern Quebec artists to collectors in the rest of Canada.
