This on-site oil sketch features A.Y. Jackson’s classic engagement with the undulating shoreline of Georgian Bay. The region’s prominent pink granite is subtly muted here by Jackson’s expression of a gently overcast light. The sunlight’s faint luster is shown reflected on the surface of the water softly buffeted by the breeze coming in off the bay. The rocky shore is dotted by sprouts of resilient green vegetation and crowned by the region’s famous windswept pines at the very top of the composition. This was a part of Canada that inspired Jackson for more than half a century and continues to inspire artists to this day.
This painting’s original owner was R.E. Dowsett, a friend of Robert and Signe McMichael, through whom he was introduced to Jackson. This painting and others were acquired directly from the artist during their long friendship.
