Graham Gillmore
Graham Gillmore
1963 -
YR
In his practice, Graham Gillmore plays with language by incising and painting compositions of words and phrases on colourful surfaces. By rearranging, punctuating, hyphenating and splitting the words, he inverts their original intention and creates new meanings. Gillmore’s tableaus dwell on the symbolic and literal meanings of language and letters, opening them up to a multiplicity of interpretations.

In 1985 Gillmore, alongside Atilla Richard Lukacs and Douglas Coupland, exhibited in the landmark exhibition Young Romantics at the Vancouver Art Gallery. After the success of this show, Gillmore moved to New York City, where his career continued to flourish with both international and domestic solo and group shows. He currently lives and works in Winlaw, British Columbia and Toronto, Ontario and is represented by Monte Clarke Gallery in Vancouver.
