Bobbie Burgers
Bobbie Burgers
1973 -
Bobby Burgers is a Canadian contemporary painter best known for her lush florals that are increasingly abstracted. Born in Vancouver, British Colombia in 1973, Burgers received a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from the University of Victoria in 1996, and attended summer sessions at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.

During her 20 years of practice, her paintings have moved from depictions of vivid, realistic bouquets and landscapes to large-scale blooms that verge on abstraction. She went from painting portraits of flowers to a more instinctual place, where flowers are anything but still. Achieved through loose gestural brush-strokes, bold colouration and thickly applied layers of paint, her work studies the relationship between nature and art, and its continuing transformation. Although mainly a painter, Burgers has included new mediums in her artistic practice, producing a series of multimedia works on paper and ceramic sculptures, such as the anemone wall installation at the Simons department store in Park Royal, West Vancouver.

Burgers is a mainly self-taught artist who credits her parents, both Dutch immigrants, for their love of design, contemporary esthetics and what she calls a “typical Dutch sense of equality between men and woman,” as her biggest life influences. She also lists artist Joan Mitchell whose colours and combative personality intrigued her, as an inspiration for her work.

Featured in galleries and art fairs across North America and Asia, Burgers is an artist of international stature whose work has been exhibited at Equinox Gallery in Vancouver and Art New York
