Lorne Holland Bouchard
Lorne Holland Bouchard
1913 - 1978
RCA
Lorne Holland Bouchard worked in a fresh style that combined elements of realism and Impressionism, using a wide variety of mediums - although he primarily worked in oil. Clarence Gagnon and Maurice Cullen were early champions of his landscapes, which were predominantly drawn from Quebec, such as the Laurentians and the Gaspé Peninsula, and Ontario.
Bouchard was born in Montreal and began sketching at the age of seven. His artistic education began at the Barnes School of Art under the tutelage of Wilfred M. Barnes, and with Professor Maurice Felix at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal. At the age of 18 he exhibited in the RCA jury show at the Art Association of Montreal.
In 1935, Bouchard began his commercial art career at Dennison Mfg. Co. Ltd., as a label designer and Assistant Art Director. After working for numerous other design firms, he eventually became a freelance illustrator in 1952. He created covers for Maclean’s Magazine, and also executed private commissions for advertising companies.
Bouchard was particularly fond of remote, wild landscapes. He traveled across Canada on painting trips, reaching as far west as the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia. Two of his painting trips were recorded in Weekend Magazine, one to the Arctic and the other a three-week cruise up the Mackenzie River in the North West Territories, accompanied by his wife, as well as David and Claire Molson.
Bouchard’s work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
