Rodney Graham
Rodney Graham
1949 - 2022
OC
Rodney Graham studied at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. He is one of the most celebrated contemporary artists in Canada. He is associated with the "Vancouver School" of artists, which includes Stan Douglas, Ken Lum, Ian Wallace and Jeff Wall. His breakthrough series was of images of inverted trees made with a camera obscura. As well as photographs, installations, paintings, prints and chromogenic transparencies, Graham is also known for his modernist short, looped films, in which he often appears as the principal character.

In 1997, Graham represented Canada at the Venice Biennale, showing his looped film Vexation Island; and subsequently, his works have been exhibited at such esteemed institutions as Whitechapel Art Gallery (2004) as well as other venues throughout North America and Europe. A touring retrospective - A Little Thought - began at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2004.

His work is in the collections of Centre Georges Pompidou, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Rennie Collection. Graham resided and worked in Vancouver.
