LITERATURE
William Kurelek, A Prairie Boy’s Winter, 1973, the related painting Hauling Hay reproduced, unpaginated

Set against a pristine winter landscape, Hauling Hay depicts two boys engaged in the timeless chore of loading hay. A fortress-like stack of snow-covered hay dominates the composition, obscuring much of the wagon and horses, while the boys’ labours take centre stage. The boy perched atop the hay breaks it free from its icy shell, his breath visibly clouding the cold air. Below, his companion peers upward from beneath his toque, pitchfork in hand, ready to guide the hay onto the wagon.

William Kurelek’s mastery lies in the way he weaves narratives into his paintings. Here, the intensity of the boys’ work contrasts with the small yet lively drama unfolding in the background—a hare dashes across the snow, pursued by a dog. This subtle inclusion underscores the coexistence of human activity and nature in Kurelek’s world.

The painting’s bright, harmonious colours bring warmth to the cold expanse. Hauling Hay is a testament to Kurelek’s ability to elevate everyday tasks into poignant and enduring works of art. It is an intimate, heartfelt portrayal of resilience, tradition and the quiet beauty of a Prairie winter.

This work is in the original frame made by Kurelek.
