A maker of photographs as much as a photographer, Scott McFarland specializes in digitally combining multiple negatives to create subtly hyperreal images that track the passage of time. In Orchard, McFarland photographed the same overgrown garden over the course of a year, capturing the changes in seasons in the Vancouver landscape and the growth and wilting of the garden. Elements from each season were composited into the same image, with blooming wisteria and ragged brown grasses stitched together into an impossible image of simultaneous moments in time. In the center, an apple tree fantastically seems to exist across the whole year at once: the new buds of spring bleed into early summer foliage, into russet autumn leaves and scraggly winter branches. McFarland made several variations of this scene, combining different elements from the same viewpoint to create subtly different panoramas.
