Constructed slowly and unfolding organically, Margaux Williamson’s paintings seem to be the result of a dialogue between order and disorder, intention and chaos. Her barely contained spaces exist between a sense of real place and an expansive, undifferentiated openness, yet fine sure footing as tangled domestic tableaux. Perspectival and temporal shifts are rendered in fluid detail, and her darkly lucious canvases find an uneasy stability in a sort of uncanny timelessness.

Transposing herself into sharing a loveseat with a young Leo DiCaprio, the scene of Back, Before… seems to float untethered in a dappled twilight. The space is structured into a sense of an interior by the furniture fragments: a set of chairs and gleaming-white table, a side table crowded with larger-than-life bottles, a cane-like lamp or coat rack. The figures, half-concealed by the lived-in living room mess and only partially rendered, vibrating with the near-familiarity of a dimly recalled dream, nonetheless command the space, inhabiting the shabbily arranged room even as they recede from focus.
