Irene Hoffar Reid was a member of the first class of the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Art in 1925 and was a member of the first graduating class in 1929. From 1933 to 1937 she taught drawing and painting at the Vancouver School of Art.

This painting is a portrait of her young daughter Catherine.
