The startling radiance and translucency of the towering iceberg in this work is achieved through the use of aquatint. Aquatinting is a process by which tonality can be introduced into a printing plate without the use of line. Embraced by early practitioners like Francisco Goya, a finely ground rosin is selectively applied to the plate and then adhered to the surface by heating. The plate is then dipped in acid, with the rosin blocking the acid from etching into the plate where applied, allowing for subtle gradations of light and tone in which Blackwood achieved mastery.
