George Pepper studied under J.W. Beatty and J.E.H. MacDonald and his work was strongly influenced by the Group of Seven. He was a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters in 1933 and an official war artist from 1943-1946. After the war, he lived in Newfoundland and the Arctic, and he is well known for his ability to capture the beauty of the maritime landscapes of Canada. In Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia, painted in 1931, Pepper presents a captivating view of the Blue Rocks area, a coastal fishing village near the importrant port town of Lunenburg. The painting boasts a rich palette of greens and blues in soft muted tones. The brushwork effectively conveys the natural contours of the rocks and the undulating arrangement leads the viewer’s eye expertly across the composition.
