PROVENANCE
Private Collection, Denmark

This sketch of a rural landscape was painted by Paul Peel in May of 1892, a few months before his untimely death in France in October of 1892. This serene landscape, painted on the spot, is a pochade, a small panel capturing the colors and atmospheres of a scene on a portable, pocket-sized format. This painting is nothing short of remarkable. Peel’s mastery of brushwork and the application of shadow demonstrates his technical prowess, and the small but comprehensive composition allows us to immerse ourselves in the tranquil beauty of the natural world. The inscription “To Pippe” in the lower right corner indicates that it was a gift to one of the artist’s Verdier in-laws.
