This briskly patterned, ruggedly textured oil sketch was produced at a turning point for both A.Y. Jackson personally, and painting in Canada generally. It was painted on his very first excursion to Algonquin Park, as Jackson had moved into Toronto’s Studio Building only months earlier, having arrived from Montreal at the invitation of Lawren Harris and J.E.H. MacDonald less than one year before. Jackson was in the process of synthesising his vision of a Modern style of Canadian painting, explored in breakthrough works like Terre Sauvage, now in the National Gallery of Canada, painted just the previous November. By combining the European influences of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Art-Nouveau with an earthy, gestural, deeply felt approach, his aim was to express the unique resonance of the Canadian landscape. He very successfully achieves that here, imbuing this on-site oil sketch with the enthralling, exploratory essence of this new school of Canadian painting.
