Helson Gallery, Halton Hills, Ontario, Le petit salon: Canadian Artists and Impressionism, April 27 - July 23, 2022

This elegant, evocative European nocturne speaks to many aspects of the mysterious, peripatetic life and work of John Young Johnstone. Produced during in his years in Europe in the lead-up to WW1, it showcases a profound engagement with the Modernism of the time. This engagement is often seen as pre-dating that of many of his more well-known Canadian peers, placing him nearer the vein of J.W. Morrice than to that of his contemporaries. Collected by the National Gallery of Canada in his lifetime, and exhibiting with Montreal’s Beaver Hall Group in their first exhibit in 1921, Johnstone is an essential and pioneering figure in Canadian art history while remaining a haunting and elusive cipher.
