In 1949 while teaching for Unesco in Holland, Macdonald visited an Indonesian museum where the charm and playfulness of the artwork seemed to tranport him into a different world. He returned to Toronto saturated by the imagery of the Eastern dancers and Buddhas, and for the next three years created a body of work heavily influenced by that subject matter and style. Joyce Zemans notes in her catalogue essay that, "Flower Worshippers evokes the mood of the Indonesian dancers with exquisite sensibility."
