This plate was commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in recognition of the cultural contributions of Matthew Teitelbaum, the then Director of the Art Gallery of Ontario, now the Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Blackwood made use of the International Code, an alphanumeric nautical signalling system to commemoration the occasion: the four flags across the top of the plate spell “MOCCA” the flags along the bottom spell “AGO” and the two flags in the center spell out the honouree’s initial’s “MT”. The work is then dated “09” with the two flags on either side. Teitelbaum was a champion of Blackwood’s work while Director of the AGO, and their holdings stand as the collection of record for the artist.
Please note: the stand is not included with the Lot.
