The printmakers Hans, Peter, and Traudl Markgraf were German immigrants to Canada in the 1950s, and quickly became well known for the silkscreen process they developed that could faithfully recreate the colour, complexity, and depth of original artworks. In the period between 1958 and 1970, the Markgrafs participated in a several programs producing high-quality silkscreen reproductions of historic and contemporary Canadian painting, organized first by the National Gallery of Canada and then the Canada Council, to be sold and distributed across the country.
"Fées d’eau" was produced by Peter Markgraf after Pellan's 1957 watercolour held in a private collection. This work was part of a series of silkscreens produced in 1967 under direction of the Canada Council and published in 1968, with a focus on contemporary painters from public and private collections. The series was widely praised for the sensitivity and accuracy of the images, and also included works such as Jack Bush's "Green Field and Sun," Joyce Wieland's "Captain," and Paul-Emile Borduas' "Abstract in Blue."
