EXHIBITED
The McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinberg, circa 1950s

A.Y. Jackson and other artists such as fellow Group of Seven member Franz Johnston visited the North West Territories at the invitation of famed prospector Gilbert LaBine. The success of LaBine’s Eldorado Mine of the shores of Great Bear Lake allowed him to fund these excursions, which Jackson undertook over multiple decades, including the late-summer, early fall of 1951. This work was once owned by Mary Rowell Coyne Jackman (1904 – 1994). Jackman was a friend of the artist, who was a regular visitor at the Jackman family cottage on Georgian Bay’s Go Home Bay. Along with her keen eye for contemporary art, Jackman was deeply committed to the social issues of her day, and in 1930 she married future Member of Parliament Harry Jackman. Their children, including Eric and Hal Jackman, have gone on to have their own major impacts on Canadian life.
