LITERATURE
A.J. Casson, My Favorite Watercolours, 1919 to 1957, 1982, page 11
A.J. Casson engaged with watercolour throughout his career, speaking of it as “exceedingly exacting, demanding and unforgiving,” adding that no medium gave him more pleasure. Casson, in fact, was so enamoured of watercolour that he was a founding member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1926. This scene in the Bancroft area, a favourite sketching location for the artist, is rendered in various shades of verdant green, a colour the artist gravitated to and mastered. His meticulous skill as a draughtsman is also evident, as watercolour at this level requires rigorous structure and attention. While displaying the strong graphic qualities of Casson’s style, this work also exemplifies the delicacy and intimacy that watercolour is capable of rendering. The nimble liveliness of this characteristic example results from an exceptional artist skilfully enjoying his medium of choice.
