LITERATURE
John G. Hatch, Kazuo Nakamura: Life & Work, Art Canada Institute, 2021, page 84
In Morning Landscape, Kazuo Nakamura returns to watercolor, a medium he first engaged with during his early artistic explorations in the 1940s. In this work, delicate, layered washes of blue and gray create a luminous, atmospheric composition in which land, sky, and light coalesce into a unified visual field. Nakamura’s practice was deeply informed by a search for underlying structures within nature’s rhythms. His depictions of vast open spaces, lakes, and dense forests were not merely representational but served as conduits for abstraction, reflecting his broader inquiries into pattern, order, and the universal forces shaping the natural world. For Nakamura, landscape was not simply a subject but "an entry point to reveal more universal ideas."
There is an unfinished watercolour sketch of a landscape on verso.
