After leaving Banff to move back to British Columbia in 1980, Takao Tanabe explored the West Coast and and began painting landscapes with a transcendent light and atmosphere, fluctuating from delicate and misty, as seen in Strait of Georgia 5/87, to stormy and brooding. In the Art Canada Institute’s 2023 book Takao Tanabe: Life & Work, Ian Thom described Tanabe’s coastal subjects as follows:
Tanabe is not particularly drawn to sunny landscapes. Perhaps in response to his childhood, he has said that he is more attuned to misty, grey environments.…
Reflecting on how he has responded to this in his work, Tanabe says…, “The west coast has its bright, clear days where all is revealed, but the views I favour are the grey mists, the rain obscured islands and the clouds that hide the details…"
