Built in the shipyards at Hamilton, Ontario, when the Chippewa launched in the spring of 1893 it was the largest boat operating on the great lakes, carrying up to 2,000 passengers. Through the next 46 years, the paddle steamer would run eastern route of Lake Ontario between Toronto and Queenston, ferrying travellers between the city and the Niagara region. The Chippewa's owner, Niagara Navigation Co., would merge with Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Co. in 1913 to create Canada Steamship Limited, which remains one of the world's largest freighter companies.
