The Collection of Torben V. Kristiansen, Vancouver

The villages along the shore of the St. Lawrence River were of great interest to A.Y. Jackson, and he returned to paint them several times over his life. This work is likely from the 1940s, but the fact that Jackson almost always chose to eliminate signs of modernization makes precise dating impossible. Here, he has chosen to depict the larger village rather than a farm on the outskirts. Central to this image is the church, which dominates the buildings of the village, with its steeple silhouetted against the river and mountainous shore. The other village buildings are painted in more subdued tones, suggesting the importance of the church in the life of the community. A large barn structure in the foreground also leads the viewer’s eye to the church.

The village of Saint-Siméon is viewed in some detail. Jackson has, however, made the landscape, the distant mountainous shore, the St. Lawrence itself, the pine trees at the left and the expansive sky equally prominent within the image. The harmonious composition suggests our place within the natural world and well captures Jackson’s warm feelings for the villages of the Charlevoix region.
