Bresnahan Lake is located just south of Ontario’s Algonquin Park, a relatively short distance from several of A.J. Casson’s most frequented sketching locations. Nearby places such as Bancroft, Barry’s Bay, Combermere, Madawaska and Palmer Rapids were some of Casson’s favourite locales throughout his career, and he depicted them many times in oil and watercolour. This example showcases his noted ability in working successfully with various shades of green. This mastery was in part due to necessity, since for much of his painting career he was employed full time as a commercial artist, which relegated extended sketching trips to the summer months. It was also due to the discipline he proudly cultivated as a graphic designer, often working on projects with strict chromatic constraints. The gentle, flowing rhythms of this composition are complemented by its rich textures, a painterly flourish not always seen in Casson’s work, making this a distinctive example.
