Peter White writes, “In Ploughing Pasture (Plate 12), Andrews uses another favourite technique. Here the scene is presented from a sharply lowered angle of vision so that the viewer is looking up and beyond. The feeling imparted is one of impressive scale and magnitude—of the land, the sky, and the task of the solitary plougher as he works his way up and over the crest of the hill.” Images of manual labour expressed in rhythmic movement are a major theme in Sybil Andrews’s works, as in this superb linocut. This work is a fine impression on buff oriental laid tissue with strong colours.
