Following his studies at Toronto’s Western Technical School, Walter Yarwood, in common with many Canadian artists of his generation, had a successful career as a commercial artist. Ever a singularly independent creator, he was self-taught, and he defined himself as a painter once he began to exhibit his works in that medium.

Organization of Things is a fine example of the Yarwood’s approach to abstraction. Despite his admiration of the paintings produced by his peers on the Post-War scene in Canada and abroad, he eschewed the explosive brushwork of “action” painting, focusing instead on the power of solid forms and the spatial relationships between them. This aesthetic was significant to the impetus of the sculptural works he produced after 1960, for which he received many awards and public commissions. Yarwood’s invitation to exhibit with the group that came to be known as Painters Eleven was at the suggestion of two participants in the Abstracts at Home show organized by William Ronald in 1953: his friend Harold Town and the man with whom he shared his working studio, Oscar Cahén. Yarwood had met Cahén not long after the latter’s move from Montreal to Toronto in 1946. Being closer in age and experience than they were to most of the other artists in the group, they developed a particularly close friendship that ended only with the tragic death of Cahén in 1956.
