BIBLIOGRAPHIE
Muriel Miller, Homer Watson, The Man of Doon, 1937, page 47
"Mr. Watson is the Canadian Constable, and Barbizon without ever having seen Barbizon."
-- Oscar Wilde
Born in Doon, Ontario, Homer Watson was self-taught. His work was admired by Oscar Wilde and collected by British royalty. He was influenced by the Hudson River School and associated with English painter John Constable and the French Barbizon School. However, his landscapes were portrayed as distinctly Canadian, and his subjects were often of the area around Doon. He was encouraging about the influence of Impressionism appearing in younger Canadian artists' work. Large holdings of Watson's work are found in the National Gallery of Canada, and Homer Watson House in Kitchener, Ontario.
The letter on verso, dated July 22, 1949, from Ross Hamilton, Director of the Doon School of Fine Arts, and one of the executors of the Estate of Homer Watson, states, "This is to certify that painting No. 244, 'Near Freeport', 12 1/2 x 16 1/2, is an original painting by the hand of Homer Watson, R.C.A."
A copy of Homer Watson, The Man of Doon by Muriel Miller accompanies this lot.
